I have used IRIS Modules in other classes and have found them to be particularly informative. I like the compact nature of the presentation. The module does a good job of disseminating the information in the most efficient manner.

This week’s IRIS Module dealt with Classroom Management, particularly dealing with disruptive and non-compliant behaviors. Having a good foundation sets up the learning environment for success, for the teacher and student. A Comprehensive Behavior Management Pl (CBMP)an needs a stable foundation of clear, positive statements of expectations. These are then used to develop classroom rules, expectations, and procedures. The rules are then used to constructed logical natural consequences as forms of fair and appropriate discipline. Once put into place, these components need to be consistently implemented and reinforced. However, there are cases in which this plan is not enough. There are students that are a challenge. That do not respond as expected and are not swayed by the discipline of natural consequences. The acting-out behavior cycle can be broken by a teacher who understand it and has learned various tools to manage problem behaviors. Teachers who utilize these tools have the ability to either prevent or fuel the problem behaviors. Thankfully, the next module will look at behavioral strategies that can help manage student behavior.
